Dr. Ulisses Mello is director of IBM Research in Brazil. In this position, he directs the operations, technical agenda and strategy of the Brazil lab, which is one of the 12 global laboratories around the world. His top priorities are to stimulate innovation in key areas of information technology applied to industries and quickly bring those innovations to the marketplace to sustain and grow IBM’s businesses, and to apply these innovations to help IBM clients succeed.
He is also an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the Global Leader for the area of Financial Services Sector in IBM’s Research Division. Ulisses joined IBM T. J Watson Research Center over 20 years ago and held a series of management and technical positions.
In 2010, he returned to Brazil to help to establish the first IBM research laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere and he led the areas of Natural Resources and Smarter Cities. Ulisses has over 70 articles published in the literature and 16 patents. He earned his PhD in Geology in 1994 from Columbia University, Master of Science from Federal University of Ouro Preto in 1987, and undergraduate degree (Geology) from University of São Paulo in 1983. He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, IBM Industry Academy, and New York Academy of Sciences.
